Community Investment

GMI’s Community Investment Programme has two main components, charitable giving and support for a wide variety of local and national organisations. The company is an active sponsor of charities local to its heritage and a supporter of community projects in the regions in which it operates.

Charitable Donations

All employees are encouraged to act as responsible and responsive citizens of their communities and to support projects, organisations and services that work towards the common good and improvement of their community and society.

Proposals for donations may come from the Board, from employees, and from individuals and groups out with the company. Each proposal in addition to support to our adopted charity, Martin House Hospice, will be considered on its merits.

Activities in the Community

GMI have a long history of involvement in national and local charities, schools and educational authorities, in most of the locations where we have developments.

We encourage employees to be active in the community in their own right and to this end operate a flexible working policy which permits staff to use a certain amount of working time each year to devote to charitable activities. Members of staff act as school governors, or are members of parent/teacher associations.

Examples of GMI activities/initiatives include:

  • Providing support to South Leeds Academy; the locally based school is situated a short distance from GMI's head office.  The Academy teaches students from a multi-cultured background between the ages of 11 and 19 years.  GMI staff have assisted with mock interviews with students providing them with constructive feedback and advice on their CV's and interview techniques.  The Academy also has a Construction Learning Centre for students to carry out hands-on activities to be educated on engineering and construction methods.  Andrew Kemp, GMI's Construction Director has become involved with the centre and has provided support with the donation of construction materials as well as organising site visits to GMI sites to widen the learnng experience further.
  • Toy donation to Multiple Choice Charity; over the Christmas period GMI staff generously donated unwanted toys and books for the local Leeds based charity, Multiple Choice.  The charity provides support services for people and their families who are addressing issues on drug/substance abuse.
